YMCA of Austin:
Teen Center
"Sebastian's story beautifully illustrates the transformative impact of the Youth/Teen Center on the lives of young people in need. Facing homelessness and few alternatives, Sebastian found refuge at the center, spending his days here while his father worked. In June Sebastian was left at the YMCA starting at 7am and was here until his father picked him up around 3pm. Initially quiet and reserved, he gradually developed trust in the staff and began to engage with other participants.
Through staff-facilitated connections, Sebastian discovered a shared passion for pool and quickly emerged as a skilled player, coaching others and becoming a force to be reckoned with at the table. He also began participating in other activities like art club and forging friendships with his peers, even making plans to spend time together outside the center.
Now, Sebastian eagerly requests to stay at the center until closing time to maximize his time with his newfound friends, demonstrating the profound sense of belonging and community he has cultivated within the center. Sebastian's journey highlights the essential role of the Youth/Teen Center in providing a safe and supportive environment where young people can thrive, build meaningful relationships, and develop a sense of purpose and connection."
