Apple Lane Community Childcare Center:
Hot Lunch Program

"A child aged 4 enrolled in our program around the age of 2 years of age when his adult sisters adopted him from their mother who was struggling with drug addiction. The preschool age child has issues with self-regulation, social emotional development and socialization with his peers.

The family has been given a variety of resources including our behavior coach working with him one to one on building self-regulation skills. The sister is very involved in supporting her brother and is very engaged in making a positive difference. We are seeing successes each day and school readiness skill building. He continues to work on his social skills and self-regulation.

This child is eligible for the free hot lunches that is funded by United Way, and when the teacher asked her class during a lesson on giving and kindness and what they would tell people who give money to help kids. This child said, "thank you for keeping my belly warm". The teacher asked what that meant and he pointed to his plate of food. He was referring to the food he receives daily in our program. Children learn at such a young age based on negative and positive experiences and he knows just what makes him feel thankful. Our partnership is so important in keeping those bellies warm."
