YMCA:
Youth/Teen Center

A 13-year-old who was part of a local pool league was looking for a place to practice and heard we had a table at the Youth/Teen Center. He came in one afternoon, cue in hand, a little guarded but hopeful. Staff welcomed him right away, offered space, and let him play—no pressure, no questions. He returned the next week. And the next.

Soon, he brought his league friends. Then teammates. Then kids from school. What started as a search for practice time turned into something bigger—a weekly gathering full of laughter, friendly competition, and connection. The more they came, the more they leaned into the space, not just playing but helping others. They began teaching younger teens the rules, how to aim, how to shake hands after a game.

Now, they’re the heart of Pool Fridays—showing up early to set up, staying late to help clean, cheering each other on. Some have even started mentoring younger players, saying, “This is our table now.” One of them shared, “I didn’t just find a place to play. I found my people.” And in that simple act—passing on skills, making space, belonging—it’s clear: this table isn’t just for pool. It’s where confidence grows, friendships form, and kids find their place.
