LIFE Mower County:
Our Place Recreation Center

EC is a 24-year-old young man with I/DD who lives with his family in Austin. He has been attending activities at the Our Place Recreation Center for almost three years. Over the past year, his family has noticed how important these activities are to him. EC does not like staying home; he looks forward to being around other people, staying busy, and maintaining a routine. When an activity gets canceled, he becomes distraught. His family understands why—these activities are a big part of his life.

During the winter months, LIFE Mower County staff adjusted some activities to start at 4:30 PM instead of 6:00 PM. At first, this change created a challenge for EC’s family. One day, a family member got home from work at 4:20 PM and thought they had plenty of time because they believed the activity still started at 6:00 PM.

EC quickly spoke up, saying the activity was starting at 4:30 PM and they needed to leave right away. Because EC knew the schedule and communicated clearly, they arrived on time, and he was able to enjoy the activity fully.

This experience showed a positive change for EC and his family. EC built confidence by advocating for himself and speaking up about what mattered to him. He also showed responsibility by keeping track of the schedule. His family saw that the Our Place Recreation Center is not only helping EC stay active and connected—it is also helping him learn important life skills that carry over into everyday life.
