The Salvation Army:
Emergency Housing

In 2025, The Salvation Army provided emergency assistance to a young woman experiencing an immediate safety crisis. The individual initially presented at SEMCAC visibly distressed, fearful, and unwilling to share many details about her situation. She was alone and seeking help. Through careful assessment, SEMCAC staff determined that she was a victim of sex trafficking and required immediate, secure shelter.

SEMCAC contacted multiple partner agencies in Mower County, including the Victim’s Crisis Center, to coordinate a response. Due to the urgent need for safe lodging, The Salvation Army was contacted to provide emergency housing support. As the only organization in Mower County with both designated funding and formal agreements with two hotels through a voucher system, The Salvation Army was able to respond immediately.

The Salvation Army provided emergency lodging in a secure hotel setting, ensuring the individual had a safe place to stay while arrangements were made for transfer to a long-term safe house. In addition to lodging, the program supplied personal hygiene items, essential clothing, and food that could be prepared in the hotel room. Warm Community Meals were delivered to the individual each evening during her stay.

A Salvation Army Caseworker maintained daily contact with the participant to ensure her safety, provide reassurance, and offer emotional support. These consistent check-ins helped reduce fear and reinforced that support was available throughout the process.

As a result of this assistance, the individual remained safe and sheltered during a critical transition period and was successfully transported to a secure safe house. Without access to emergency lodging funds and partnerships, she would have had no safe housing option during this time. This coordinated response demonstrates how emergency assistance programs play a vital role in protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring safety, stability, and access to long-term support.
