Adams Area ambulance Service

My name is Abby Barth. I am from Austin but have been with Adams Ambulance for a year now. When I first got my EMT certification it took me a while to find a place to put my certification to use. Everywhere I applied was denied due to lack of experience. I started to lose hope, but I wasn't going to give up that easily. I wanted to be able to help people and I was determined to do so. Luckily I was pointed towards Adams and welcomed with open arms.
I am the youngest of 5, I have 4 older brothers and 3 of them have struggled with drug abuse. They would always come over with cuts, bumps and bruises. After some time my parents were tired of trying to help them. Being young and naive I didn't want to give up on them. I started being the one they would go to get bandaged up. They did end up getting the help they need to get clean and I couldn't be more proud. Then issues with my dad reared its ugly head. |
My dad started having these "spells" and we didn't know what they were and the hospitals couldn't figure it out. He would get hot, think he needed to go to the bathroom and lose consciousness. 3 of these times I was the only one home and found him. It was terrifying, I didn't know what to do so of course I called the ambulance. Seeing how they were calm and collected while it was such a scary time for us was reassuring. After this and everything that I went through growing up, I made a decision on what I wanted to do. I want to help people, and make their bad days a little less scary.
The schooling wasn't easy. It was a lot of hard work on top of working full time. It was very stressful at times but I knew I wanted this, and I knew I could accomplish it. And I am so glad I did. Being with Adams ambulance is something I will never forget. I will always be grateful for them welcoming me in and showing me how things work. They answer whatever questions I have without making me feel inferior. They help me feel confident in what I do and work with me when I am wanting to improve things I don't feel 100% confident about.
The Adams area crew has been nothing but helpful and kind. In the short amount of time I've been there they have made me feel included and one of them since day one. Without them I don't know where I would be. They believe in me and make me feel comfortable and confident in myself and my skills. Seeing how they work and operate not only as a team but take care of each other like family is the best feeling. They really are the best team. I am so grateful to be a part of the crew.
